You’re Not The Twitter Police
We’re all human beings and we all know what that involves. We all know that we wont get along some of the time and we all know that we have the potential to get caught up in things we maybe wouldn’t ordinarily get caught up in. Many of us are also twitter users and we all know what that’s about too. Only it seems that sometimes, we maybe don’t…
I’ve personally seen a large increase of people who are probably very nice in real life laying down the law about what everyone else chooses to post on twitter. This is largely non aggressive, probably said with the best of intentions and is also very irritating to more people than just me, hence I thought i’d have a rant.
There are things said by people on twitter that we hate, things we disagree strongly with, agree with and love…just like in real life really. So why do we behave so differently behind the veil of 140 chars?
I’ve seen ‘tellings off’ recently for using all caps, re-tweeting, choice of subject matter and promotion of stuff by twitter users. I’ve seen statements that make my stomach turn, the worst of these involving the words “polluting my twitter stream” I mean seriously, just stop for one minute, look at those words in order, one at a time, consider their collective meaning and have a good long think about what you’ve said. Polluting my twitter stream? Fuck right off with that shite.
If this is a power thing and you want to control the quality, quantity, subject matter or tone of what you are exposed to on twitter and you dont have tolerance, patience or a ‘live and let live’ attitude then the trick is not to be a whinge and tell everyone what YOU think is acceptable, the trick is to use the power that twitter has given you from the very beginning and use that ‘unfollow’ feature BUT, lets see how much you get out of twitter once you’ve unfollowed everyone who’s subjects and methods you disagree with.
So, can we maybe all agree that we’re never all going to get along with each other all of the time, learn to live with others views and methods and continue to be involved in the what i’ve personally found to be THE most valuable online resource/social network/micro blogging/’thing’ that has appeared in recent years?
